Movement for the Movement: Arts + Activism Workshop in South LA

Move, connect, and reimagine the role of the arts in building a more just future.

Step into the powerful intersection of art and activism in Movement for the Movement, a half-day, hands-on workshop designed to inspire new ways of thinking about your own work in the performing arts.

Led by acclaimed choreographer Ana Maria Alvarez and her company CONTRA-TIEMPO in partnership with Community Coalition, you’ll experience firsthand how artists and organizers collaborate to build lasting community impact. Through movement-based activities, dialogue, and storytelling, you’ll learn strategies for:

  • Building authentic partnerships across sectors

  • Engaging communities through creative practice

  • Using the arts as a catalyst for social change

For more than a decade, CONTRA-TIEMPO and Community Coalition have partnered to harness the power of dance, storytelling, and community organizing to create lasting change. CONTRA-TIEMPO is multilingual Los Angeles-based activist dance theater company that creates communities and dynamic multi-modal experiences to the concert stage. Community Coalition (CoCo) is a nationally recognized hub for grassroots activism founded by the current LA Mayor Karen Bass in response to the devastating health crisis of the crack-cocaine epidemic of the 80s and 90s as well as the racial reckoning sparked by the 1992 Rodney King riots.

“People from outside of our city often times think of LA as Hollywood, fake, flashy and commercial,” said workshop leader Ana Maria Alvarez. “Los Angeles is one of the most vibrant centers of multi racial coalition building work in California and across our country.”

Set in the heart of South Los Angeles, you’ll meet the artists and organizers who are behind-the-scenes, hear their stories, and witness how the arts can fuel social movements and strengthen community bonds. Along the way, you’ll see a part of Los Angeles that’s often overlooked but essential to understanding the city’s dynamic cultural landscape.

Movement for the Movement is open to the public and located the CoCo headquarters in South Los Angeles! Tickets are $75 and can be purchased on our conference registration website through August 22 and include roundtrip transportation from the JW Marriott.

You’ll leave inspired and equipped with practical tools, fresh perspectives, and real-world examples you can bring back to your organization, your community, and your audiences. Space is limited so sign up soon and be part of the movement.

Register by August 22.
