2013 Award Nominations Update

Acknowledging the Movers & Shakers of WAA

Last year WAA announced the newest award to its family – the Vanguard Award – to stellar reception by the WAA membership. We received 15 applications describing amazing projects that are moving the field forward. After presenting the five finalists (Del E. Webb Center’s Flying E Ranch Residency Program; the Levitt Pavilion’s model of turning brownspace into vibrant performing arts centers; Stu Anderson’s creative video marketing with Paquin Entertainment; the conception, design and programming of The Loft at ArtPower! UC San Diego; and Trey McIntyre Project’s Boise Bright Spot Project), YOU our members got to choose the only awardee voted on by the full membership.

The inaugural Vanguard Award was presented to ArtPower! at UC San Diego for The Loft. Who will the Vanguard Award go to – and ALL of WAA’s Awards – this year?

The 2013 Awards Committee is currently seeking nominations for WAA’s four prestigious awards:

Mentoring Award

Recognizing excellence in mentoring and a commitment to the professional advancement of the western performing arts community.

Service Award

Recognizing exceptional volunteer service to Western Arts Alliance, its members, and the field.

Vanguard Award

Recognizing inspirational projects, new work, and ground‐breaking initiatives.

Leadership Award

Honoring extraordinary vision, distinguished leadership, and artistic achievement.

Nominations are being accepted now until May 31. All who are nominated for Mentoring, Service and Leadership will be reviewed and discussed by the Awards Committee, and each award winner will be honored at the 2013 Awards Ceremony, taking place in Los Angeles, CA, on Tuesday, August 27. (Remember, the Awards Ceremony is now separate from the Annual Luncheon, which is scheduled on August 28.)

The Vanguard Award applications must be completed by each nominee (nominations can be submitted on behalf of oneself / one’s company!), and the Vanguard Award Application Deadline is June 28, 2013.

2013 Board Elections

Directing the Future of WAA

The WAA Board of Directors is committed to advancing the performing arts field through innovative thinking and ground-breaking initiatives. This dedicated group of 13 members from across North America works to honor and advance the views and interests of the membership by providing governance, strategic direction, and financial oversight to Western Arts Alliance.

This year, the terms of our WAA Secretary/Treasurer and three Directors will expire in September. All four incumbents are eligible for an additional term: Secretary/Treasurer Cory Baker, Scottsdale Center for the Arts; and Directors Cindy Hwang, Concert Artists Guild; Seth Malasky, Paradigm; and Stephen Seifert, Newman Center for the Performing Arts.

Any director who wants to stand for an additional term must notify the past president who chairs the Governance Committee. The committee, which is comprised of three WAA board members and four members at large, will be responsible for assessing the director’s performance (reviewing self-evaluations, board giving, attendance, committee work, etc.). The committee will decide by formal vote whether to re-nominate the director.

Nominations of candidates for the Board of Directors will also be accepted from the membership at-large. At-large nominations will be thoroughly considered alongside those of any directors eligible for an additional term.

A strong candidate will possess the ability to:

  • Positively affect the organization in areas such as financial management, personnel or business management, professional development, membership development, and fundraising/development.
  • Devise creative solutions to problems facing the field.
  • Be fully involved as both a knowledgeable pursuer of “old business” and an aggressive proposer of “new business” in the deliberations and decisions affecting the organization.
  • Carry out the full responsibilities and requirements of the WAA Board of Directors.

The deadline for nominations is June 15, 2013.
