Creative Placemaking

Building Community or Displacing It?

Creative placemaking is the hot new buzzword in arts funding. Artplace America, a consortium of 12 major foundations supporting creative placemaking, defines it as an endeavor “in which art and culture plays an explicit and central role in shaping communities’ social, physical, and economic futures.” But art historian/critic Rosalyn Deutsche has called it “Artists as the ‘shock troops of gentrification’.” Which is it? Our panel of arts and civic leaders debate the pros and cons of a movement already underway in San Antonio.
