The 2013 Vanguard Award:

WAA’s Member-Selected Award to Highlight Innovation

Creativity, invention, and discovery are the bread and butter of the performing arts. To reflect on and celebrate the insights, decisions, and programs that advance our artists, organizations, and field, WAA presents the Vanguard Award in honor of inspirational projects, new work, and ground-breaking initiatives.

The Award is highlights innovative work in the following categories:

  • Programming
  • New Artistic Projects
  • Community Outreach/Residencies
  • Creative Space (use of venue[s], placemaking, etc.)
  • Marketing/Promotion
  • Development/Fundraising
  • Media & Technology (includes social and mobile media)

Apply or Nominate Someone for the WAA Vanguard Award

Q: How can I nominate a project? Can I nominate myself / my organization?
A: The nomination form is online; self-nominations are accepted. All nominees must complete the Vanguard Award Application to be considered for the award. Nominations will be accepted until Friday, May 31, 2013; the application deadline is Friday, June 28, 2013.

Q: Are there any eligibility requirements?
A: Yes:

  • The project/initiative/performance must be operational. Planned or proposed projects are not eligible.
  • The award is open only to current WAA member organizations and their affiliated staff and artists.
  • WAA Officers and Directors, Awards Committee members, their affiliates, employees, and members of their immediate families are not eligible to apply.

About the Vanguard Award

Q: Who selects the award recipient?
A: The WAA membership! WAA's Awards Committee will present a group of finalists to the WAA member community to vote upon.

Q: How do I tell my story?
A: WAA will publish a webpage for each finalist that presents the project through embedded media (audio, video, slide-shows, etc.), photos, and supporting documents. Successful nominees will use audio and visual media to powerfully demonstrate their project to the WAA membership.

Q: When will the recipient be announced?
A: All award finalists will be presented at WAA's Awards Ceremony—be sure to join us on August 27 during the 2013 Annual Conference in Los Angeles, CA!

WAA Awards Program Overview

The goal of the Western Arts Alliance Awards Program is to nurture and celebrate leadership, encourage best practices that stimulate the field, promote volunteerism and service to WAA, and strengthen and celebrate WAA as a community of peers and professionals. It is the purpose of the Awards Program to identify and acknowledge those members or organizations whose innovation, hard work and dedication advance our field and association.

Recipients will be honored at the Awards Ceremony and Opening Plenary in Los Angeles, CA, on August 27 - be sure to come and celebrate with us the spirit of innovation and volunteerism that defines our field!
