Do I Need a Passport or a Visa?
Everyone will need one or the other. US Citizens require only a passport to visit to Canada. There are several other countries who citizens require a visa to visit Canada, and for a list of them, please visit this page on the Citizenship and Immigration Canada website.
A routine processing takes 4-5 weeks. Expedited service takes 2-3 weeks. If you live near an agency, you can do it in person, and that takes about one week for processing (some restrictions apply and appointments are required). By far, your safest and best bet is to just take care of it now. You’ll have a new passport by May and won’t have to give it another thought down the road when there are so many other things to think about.
