EXPRESSIONS DANCE COMPANY- Brief History

Innovation, originality and energy have been the trademark of Expressions Dance Company since its debut in 1985. Through a hectic program of mainstage performances, touring productions, school productions and school and community dance classes, Expressions keeps itself at the forefront of dance. The Company has achieved national and international recognition through its extensive touring program and has performed at festivals throughout the world. Over the last few years Expressions has established a strong international profile.

Expressions will be performing Virtually Richard3, which made its world premiere at ENERGEX Brisbane Festival in 2000. The piece has also been performed at the Ludwigsburg Festival in Germany and in Toowoomba and Sydney. In 2004, Expressions performed Virtually Richard3 at the Festival of Mexico in the Historic Centre of Mexico City. Virtually Richard3 was filmed and broadcast nationwide around Mexico to a viewing audience of over 50 million people throughout Central America. Expressions returned to Australia to set off on a national tour of Virtually Richard3 around the country from April to June.

Choreographer Maggi Sietsma created Virtually Richard3 from the scenes that fascinated her in Shakespeare’s Richard III. Rather than reproduce the story, she chose to focus attention on the women in the play, incorporating scenes which describe their expressions of grief, anguish, fury and terror as Richard goes about destroying their lives. She works with episodes within the play including the death of Clarence, the wooing of Lady Anne and her unfortunate demise, the lament of Elizabeth on the abduction of her children and Richard’s coronation, which ultimately leads to his final defeat and death
