Tips and Strategies on Federal Taxation for Foreign Artists

Existing laws regarding Federal Taxation of Foreign Artists are now being more strictly enforced. Both managers and presenters need to understand the withholding requirements, learn to separate fact from rumor, and have the tools necessary to evaluate whether the dreaded 30% withholding on gross income can be reduced or even avoided completely. This session will give practical information regarding compliance and procedures, from international treaties and Central Withholding Agreements to filing tax returns.

“Let’s Make a Deal” – Negotiating Artists’ Fees in a Challenging Economy

This course is for anyone negotiating performance contracts in today's economy, including executive directors, artistic directors, and program managers. This session is designed for first-time buyers and/or presenters early in their careers. We will look at a variety of deal options with special focus on the “split deal” commonly used in the commercial touring world. You will learn how to structure a deal, become familiar with the terminology (back end, royalty, guarantees, points, splits, etc.), how to make—and when to accept or not accept—an offer, how to approach the who's who at the major agencies, plus the pros and cons of working directly with an artist versus a manager or agent. Verbal agreements, offer letters, letters of credit, deposits for first-time buys, pencil holds, cancellations, and more will be covered.
