Robert Egger has a passion for advocacy and an iron-willed determination to fundamentally change the nonprofit sector in the United States. WAA is excited to bring this community activist to Phoenix, as he will energize the delegation with ideas on how to bring meaningful change to our communities.
Simply put—we must make the case that we are giants of the economy. In fact—we should be viewed as almost equal, if not better investments than traditional businesses in every community. With some serious thought, we might really re-align our tax codes and redesign how cash flows. We could totally change the dynamic that forces newly minted college grads to choose between making money and doing good. The future is the hybrid—with the ethics and values of nonprofits trumping the failed dogma of “get rich or die trying” that has permeated our economy (and business schools) for far too long.
Robert Egger is the founder and president of D.C. Central Kitchen, where unemployed men and women learn marketable culinary skills by turning food donated by restaurants, hotels, and caterers into balanced meals. He was included in the NonProfit Times list of the 50 Most Powerful and Influential Nonprofit Leaders in 2006, 2007, and 2008. He was the recipient of the 2004 James Beard Foundation Humanitarian of the Year Award.
Currently, Robert is the co-convener of the first Nonprofit Congress and the founder of the V3 Campaign, which is working to get the voice, value, and votes of the nonprofit sector recognized in every election in America. Robert’s book on the non-profit sector, Begging for Change: The Dollars and Sense of Making Nonprofits Responsive, Efficient, and Rewarding For All, which was published in 2004 by HarperCollins, received the 2005 McAdam Prize for “Best Nonprofit Management Book” by the Alliance for Nonprofit Management.
